MOT Study Mission to Australia: Valuable exchange for better transport operations in Vietnam
IN BRIEF
Aus4Transport, the Australian initiative supporting the Government of Vietnam to develop high quality transport infrastructure, recently organised a study mission to Australia for leaders and policymakers from the Ministry of Transport, along with representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance, from 24 June to 02 July. The mission was a big success, and all MOT counterparts were enthusiastic about applying their newly acquired knowledge to the transport sector in Vietnam.

As part of the continuous support the Australian Government provides to Vietnam’s transport sector through the Aus4Transport Program, a delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MOT), along with representatives from the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and Ministry of Finance (MOF), participated a 9-day study mission to Australia. The objective of the visit was to learn first-hand about Australia’s transport sector management processes to help develop strategies to apply best international practice to the Vietnamese scenario.
Aiming to enhance capacity and support the institutional strengthening of MOT, the study mission facilitated the exchange of experiences and lessons learnt between MOT leadership and related Australian institutions, agencies, and private sector organisations. The Vietnamese delegation had the opportunity to learn about innovative technologies and optimal development strategies that will strongly support the advancement of the transport sector in Vietnam. A wide variety of activities were integrated into the mission, such as meetings with relevant state agencies and private sector organisations currently operating and managing rail, civil aviation, and road infrastructure in Australia.
The delegation undertook site visits to Western Sydney Airport, Sydney Rail Operations Centre, and Linfox’s Aviation and Logistics Hub at Avalon Airport, and participated in seminars with various state agencies and institutions, the University of NSW, and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia to discuss future infrastructure planning approaches, including integrating big data and artificial intelligence methodologies into the analysis of user usage patterns for future urban and transport planning strategies. Providing open exchanges, knowledge sharing and field visits helped expand Aus4Transport’s impact on Vietnam’s infrastructure policy by promoting best international practice in operation and management of the Vietnamese transport sector. It also encouraged the development of useful linkages between MOT and related Australian agencies and institutions through building a support and collaboration network.
The delegation was also warmly received by the First Assistant Secretary, Southeast Asia Regional Division, and the A/g Director of the Vietnam Economic Section in the Vietnam and Mekong Strategy Branch, at DFAT Headquarters in Canberra. The delegation took the opportunity to provide a first-hand report on the progress and achievements of Aus4Transport to date and advocate for its continued support to MOT and the transport sector as a whole.
The Vietnamese delegation from MOT is confident the study mission will greatly assist Vietnamese authorities to better plan and manage ongoing major infrastructure projects, especially those in the aviation and railways sectors, and will help them implement best international e-Government practice, a current priority focus for the Vietnamese Government.
This successful study mission was made possible through the close cooperation and partnership between the Government of Vietnam and the Government of Australia who, through Aus4Transport, work together to increase investment in Vietnam’s transports infrastructure, leading to an improved national transport network that supports economic growth and poverty reduction.
